SOUTHINGTON — After struggling for seven years with profound hearing loss in her right ear, Meriden resident Amanda Geruch accepted the fact that, at 26, she would never hear out of her ear again.
That was until Geruch stepped in to the Raya Clinic, 200 Queen St., and her hearing was completed restored along with the correction of her other aliments — migraines, fatigue and back and neck pain .
“I had gone to traditional doctors, specialists and chiropractors for years,” Geruch said. “I was very skeptical when I first came here, because I thought I had tried it all before. I just mentioned that I had lost my hearing, not thinking that they could do anything about it.”
Turns out, Raya Clinic owner Dr. Stacey Raya and her team of doctors had a whole new menu of treatments they felt would work for Geruch.
“We are a complete wellness center,” Raya said. “When a patient first comes to us, we evaluate them and document our findings. We find out what the patient is unhappy with and we work with our findings. What we are doing is really a wellness revolution.”
Geruch began visiting the clinic in August of 2008 three times per week to receive treatments ranging from chiropractic methods to physical therapy and traction, which she even did at home.
While lying on their back, a chin strap is wrapped around the patient, which has a weight dangling from the end. The patient allows the weight to fall over the end where they are lying, pulling the forehead toward the ground to help restore the natural curve of the neck and to regain posture.
Working as a secretary, Geruch was hunched over at a computer desk for eight long hours a day. Within a month, her neck and back pain was almost nonexistent. Her migraines and 20-year-old allergies disappeared along with her bottle of Tylenol.
And then came the miraculous part — a word used by Dr. Tim Malton: Geruch’s hearing was fully restored in her right ear.
After Raya did a complete analysis of Geruch, she discovered that some misplaced bones were pinching the nerves that controlled her hearing. Through her treatment, the team was able to un-pinch those nerves and restore hearing.
“They never gave me any false hope here,” Geruch said. “They told me that nothing would happen overnight, so I made it a point to stick with the program. I really didn’t think they could do anything for my hearing. I didn’t think that they were connected at all.”
As Raya says, the spine controls everything. Nerves from the spine can affect digestion and sexual reproduction. Raya has had two patients who have come to her as a last effort to get pregnant and they both have conceived after treatment.
While Geruch’s results and the Raya clinic’s claims are nothing short of a marvel, there are skeptics in the medical world that would beg to differ with the clinic.
“It is very unlikely that the patient restored hearing loss because of chiropractic treatment,” Dr. Hamid Sami, neourologist. “You would have to know what the cause of the hearing loss was. Generally chiropractors are a good form of supplementary treatment and they can alleviate a lot of muscular pain. They do use some devices that are not scientifically proved or reliable.”
“We really like to let other people know when something miraculous happens here,” Dr. Jessica Bellinger said. “We have testimonies of all of our patient’s stories to let other people know that we can help.”
“You should never be surprised with what your body can do,” Raya said. “It can heal itself. All we do is remove the interference.”
